DHARMA IN THE DOOMSCROLL with Julie Dohrman The Yoga Sutras offer the Yamas and Niyamas as a guide for living with greater awareness, integrity, and intention. Thousands of years later, these teachings feel remarkably relevant. In a world of constant information, distraction, outrage, and overwhelm, how can yoga help us stay grounded, connected, and awake to how we are living? In this gathering we’ll explore the Yamas and Niyamas not simply as philosophy, but as a living practice. Through discussion, guided reflection, and integrated asana, we’ll consider how these teachings show up in our relationships, our choices, our habits, and even the ways we give and consume our attention. First we look at the Yamas, yoga’s ethical foundations for how we relate to others and the world around us through non-harm, truthfulness, non-stealing, wise use of energy, and non-grasping. We will consider how they apply to modern life: through our speech, our attention, our consumption, our relationships, and even our relationship to the endless scroll. The Niyamas are a reflection on how we relate to our inner life and cultivate clarity, resilience, and a deeper sense of meaning in daily life. The five Niyamas—purity, contentment, disciplined practice, self-study, and surrender - will invite looking at how we tend to our environment, appreciate what we have, honor our energy levels, study our mind-body patterns, and soften a grip on control. Asana becomes a container for embodying these ideas—an opportunity to notice our patterns and make the unconscious more conscious. The physical practice of yoga offers tremendous benefits, but yoga has never been only about fitness. It’s also a practice of insight: a way of understanding ourselves and engaging more intentionally and of benefit with the world around us. Join us to gain some perspective and reconnect to purpose amidst the modern noise. Everyone is welcome, no previous asana experience required. Come prepared for some movement.
