In Jo Siska Tanzstudio’s words
This open-level dance improvisation class invites participants to discover and develop their body awareness and individual dance expression. The class brings together two interconnected practices – technique and improvisation – creating a space to deepen physical awareness, explore movement freely, and become more conscious of how an individual movement language develops. TECHNIQUE The class begins with a structured warm-up focused on awakening, mobilising, and strengthening the body. Exercises working with breath, alignment, weight, articulation, spatial awareness, and different movement qualities help participants become more attentive to their bodies and their physical possibilities. The practice draws from contemporary dance as well as principles of the Duncan Method, Jooss-Leeder Method, and Susanne Linke’s Inner Suspension. The aim is not to impose a particular aesthetic, but to develop a sensitive and responsive body as a foundation for individual expression. IMPROVISATION The warm-up leads into guided dance improvisation, where movement is initiated through different impulses, tasks, and points of departure. These can range from music and rhythm to movement principles such as falling, fluttering, or suspension, as well as images, poetry, and stories. The exercises create different structures and frameworks within which participants can discover unexpected movement pathways and make their own choices. Inspired by danse libre and Ausdruckstanz, the practice encourages participants to let go, surrender to the movement, and discover freedom and spontaneity within given structures. Ultimately, it is an invitation to JUST DANCE! Practical Information The class is designed as an ongoing dance improvisation course, with each session building on the previous one. The class is open to adults aged 16 and over and is suitable for all levels. Please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. The class is mainly practiced barefoot. The course is conducted in collaboration with dance educator Modris Opelts, who occasionally steps in as a substitute and continues the course program.
