Where to find it

Long holds in Rotterdam

Long holds are a way of practicing yoga where a posture is kept for an extended period, so the body has time to soften into it. In Rotterdam this is mostly yin, a slow practice that works with the deeper connective tissue of the body. The classes cluster in the evening, with a smaller group of mornings, and they are led by a small circle of facilitators across a handful of studios.

What the practice looks like

Most long hold classes in Rotterdam are yin, and yin is the style that defines this kind of practice here. A posture is held for longer than in most other forms of yoga, so the muscles can relax and the deeper tissue has time to respond. The focus stays on sensation rather than on depth or form, which makes the work feel calm even when the hold is demanding.

Compassion Yoga Studio in Delfshaven offers several versions of this, including a warm yin class and a class with infrared heating. YG Studios in Cool offers yin as well, with a description that talks about unwinding completely. Pilates on the mat also appears in this group, with a class that focuses on precision, control and alignment, and the breath is part of each.

When classes run

The evening is where most of these classes sit. Start times cluster around 7:45pm to 8:15pm, and the busiest days are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Morning classes exist too, starting as early as 8:45am, though they make up a smaller share of the week.

Most classes run about an hour, and a few are slightly shorter or longer. Almost all are marked as calm, and about half are open to all levels, which makes them a reasonable place to begin for someone who has not practiced before.

Where to start

Delfshaven and Cool are the neighborhoods where these classes gather most. Compassion Yoga Studio is the place to go in Delfshaven, and YG Studios is the place in Cool. Between them they hold most of what is on offer, so a visitor who wants to practice long holds in Rotterdam will find options in both areas.

A newcomer might start with a yin class in the evening at one of these studios, since the pace is slow and the instruction is gentle. Classes are taught mostly in Dutch, so checking the studio's description beforehand helps if you want to know the language before you arrive.

Long holds in Rotterdam: questions and answers

What is a long hold practice?

Long holds are postures kept for an extended period, so the body can soften into them over time. In Rotterdam this shows up mostly as yin. Yin is the form most often named here, with classes at Compassion Yoga Studio in Delfshaven and at YG Studios in Cool.

Is it good for beginners?

Yes. Several classes are marked for all levels, and about half of what is on offer carries that label. The slow pace of yin makes it a common first step for someone new to the mat.

When do most people practice?

Most classes start in the evening, and the busiest start times fall between 7:45pm and 8:15pm. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are the days when most people practice. Mornings are there too, with a start as early as 8:45am.

Which studios have the most classes?

Compassion Yoga Studio in Delfshaven and YG Studios in Cool have the most classes. Compassion Yoga Studio offers yin alongside a mat Pilates class that is built around precision and control.

How long are the classes?

Most classes run about an hour, and the typical length is 60 minutes. A few are a little shorter or longer, with examples at 55 and 65 minutes.

What kinds of classes are there?

Among the classes, Calm is the feeling named most often, and Restore is the energy. Yin is the style that stands out, and a smaller share is Pilates, mat Pilates or infrared yin, which Compassion Yoga Studio offers as Pure Yin Yoga.

Who leads the classes?

Around ten facilitators lead these classes. Kelvin, Karolina Pilates and Stretch, Nicola, Dubravka and Rogier are among those with the most classes, along with Felix, Basiet, Lo-Fei, Róisín and Saskia.

Do I need a pass to attend?

Classes are taught mostly in Dutch, so a non-Dutch speaker may want to check the studio's own description before booking. A pass is not needed for these classes, since none of them ask for one.
