What the evening practice looks like

Most of what you will find here is yin, practiced with long holds and plenty of support from props, so the body can release without effort. Restore and calm are the feelings that come up most often, and a handful of classes also work with sleep and release. Sound appears in a smaller share of the sessions, usually as gong or singing bowls layered over the practice.

The classes are concentrated in the evening. Almost all of them start at 8pm, and most run about an hour, with some stretching a little longer. Tuesday, Thursday and Monday are the days when the most classes take place.

Where and with whom to practice

HUM Yoga in Grey Lynn offers the most classes in this collection, with several Candlelight Yin and sound bath sessions on the timetable. OM yoga studio in Stonefields is the other place where the evening classes gather. Across both, a small group of facilitators leads most of the sessions, including Esmeralda Tikao, Rodolfo Villanueva, Fiona Liu, Joana Kuersten and Maryam Al-Roubaiai.

If you are new to this kind of practice, start with a yin class at either studio. The pace is steady and the props do much of the work, which makes the first evening easier to settle into.

Late night stillness: questions and answers

What kind of classes are in the late night stillness collection?

Most of the late classes in this collection are slow, restoring practices held in the evening. Yin is the style that appears most often, and the classes are built around long holds with props so the body can settle.

When do these classes start?

Nearly every class in this collection begins at 8pm, so the evening is the time to plan around. Most of the classes run about an hour, with a few running a little longer.

Which studios offer the most late classes?

HUM Yoga in Grey Lynn has the most classes in this collection, with OM yoga studio in Stonefields close behind. Both are places where the evening sessions gather.

Is this collection suitable for someone new to yoga?

Yin is a good place to start, since the classes are gentle and rely on props and extended holds. Several Candlelight Yin and Yin classes at HUM Yoga are built for that kind of slow arrival.

Are there classes with sound in them?

Sound baths and gong and bowl sessions show up in a smaller share of the classes. They pair the stillness of yin with sound, so the practice tends to feel deeper and more absorbing.

What feeling do these classes aim for?

Several of the classes are described as relaxing and calming, with some aimed at helping people release tension and rest. A few are explicitly framed around sleep, so they suit anyone looking to wind down after a busy day.
