How the evenings run

This collection is built around the evening. Almost every class starts at 6:30pm, and the day's practice closes there, with no mornings and almost nothing at midday. Thursday, Wednesday and Sunday are the days when most classes run, and the weekend adds about a third of the list.

The classes are typically about 75 minutes long, which leaves room to settle in and to come back to yourself without rushing. Nearly all of them are open to every level, and most are marked as calm, restorative or focused on flexibility.

Yin and gentle yoga

Yin is the most common style in this collection. The postures are held passively for a long time, so the body has room to soften, and the practice asks for stillness rather than effort. The yin class at Yoga Etxea Guéthary, in Guéthary, moves slowly through this, with the sensations of each posture changing as you stay in it.

The Yoga Méridiens class at MANA YOGA CENTER, in Seignosse, takes a different route. It works through postures alongside the body's meridians, helping you notice how the body feels and how to adjust your practice to suit it. Both classes suit someone looking to let the day go.

Calm after work: questions and answers

What kind of classes are in this collection?

Most of them are evening classes, starting at 6:30pm, and nearly all of them are for all levels. Yin, restore and yoga for flexibility make up much of the list, so these are slow, passive practices built to ease you out of the workday.

When do most people practice?

Almost every class runs in the evening, and the earliest start is 6:30pm. Thursday, Sunday and Wednesday are the busiest days, and the weekend holds about a third of the classes.

Are these classes good for beginners?

Yes. Nearly all of the classes are marked as suitable for all levels, so you can come along without any prior experience. The yin classes in particular are passive, with long holds and little effort, which suits people who are new to yoga.

Where can I find these classes?

Two studios stand out for this collection: Yoga Etxea Guéthary, in Guéthary, and MANA YOGA CENTER, in Seignosse. Both offer classes about calm, yoga and flexibility, and a handful of facilitators lead most of the sessions, including Florine Floc'h, Ana Pedraza, Zoé Iturria and Kamel Boukir.

What does a typical class feel like?

Most classes run about 75 minutes. A yin session at Yoga Etxea Guéthary asks for stillness, with postures held passively and slowly, while a Yoga Méridiens class at MANA YOGA CENTER works through postures and the body's meridians. Both are good for winding down after a busy day.

Where should I start if I'm new?

Start with an all-levels evening class, since nearly all of them are open to everyone. A yin class at Yoga Etxea Guéthary is a gentle first step, as the postures are held passively and the pace stays slow.
