Live music in Brighton

Brighton has a distinct group of yoga classes that happen alongside a DJ or live musicians. The music becomes part of the practice itself, shaping the pace of each flow and the rhythm of the transitions between poses. Most sessions are vinyasa or flow-based and last about an hour. They take place mostly in the evening and around midday, and the studios most closely linked to this practice are in Kemptown and Poets' Corner.

What the music adds to the practice

The defining feature of these classes is the sound. Some are led with a DJ playing beats, others with live musicians, and in both cases the music sets the tempo for the flow. Nearly all of the classes are built on vinyasa and bring together yoga, flexibility and movement, with many emphasizing focus and a sense of joy in the practice. Each class carries its own character. Vinyasa Flow at Luna Wave Yoga is slow yet strong, building energy and presence as the evening settles in. Yoga Dance Flow at Humankind Hot is creatively sequenced, so the transitions between poses feel as significant as the poses themselves.

Where and when to practice

Kemptown holds several of the studios that run these classes, including Luna Wave Yoga and Humankind Hot, and Studio Sensi in Poets' Corner is another place to find them. The schedule leans toward the evening, when more than half of the classes begin, and the latest starts are at 5:45pm. Midday classes make up about a third of the sessions, with the earliest beginning at 12:15pm. Weekends also have a fair share of classes. Thursday, Saturday and Wednesday are the days with the most sessions, so those are good days to look for a class.

Live music: questions and answers

What kind of classes are these?

Most of the classes here are yoga, and nearly all of them are vinyasa or flow-based, with music from a DJ or live musicians running through them. The sessions run about 60 minutes, and the Kemptown studios Luna Wave Yoga and Humankind Hot are among the places that hold them most often.

Are these classes suitable for beginners?

Yes. More than half of the classes are marked as suitable for first-time practitioners and for all levels, so a newcomer has plenty to choose from. Some classes, like Advanced Vinyasa Flow at Studio Sensi in Poets' Corner, are pitched at people who are ready to experiment with postures and move toward the edges of their practice.

When do most of these classes take place?

The classes cluster in the evening and around midday. More than half start in the evening, and the latest start is at 5:45pm. Thursday, Saturday and Wednesday are the days when the most classes take place, and a good number of sessions fall on weekends. The earliest class begins at 12:15pm, and none start before 9am.

Where are these classes held?

Most of the classes are concentrated in Kemptown and Poets' Corner. Luna Wave Yoga and Humankind Hot are both in Kemptown, and Studio Sensi is in Poets' Corner. Sabrina Gentile, Ella Muyot, Michelle Varchione and Anna Waldmann are among the facilitators who lead the most sessions.

How should I choose my first class?

Choose a class that matches your level and the time of day that suits you, then book directly with the studio. Vinyasa Flow at Luna Wave Yoga is a good place to start for many people, since it builds from a slower pace into more strength and focus. If you want something with more movement and rhythm, Yoga Dance Flow at Humankind Hot lets you move freely through transitions between poses.
