Deep rest in Geneva

Deep rest in Geneva means yoga nidra and restorative classes, most of them held in the evening after the working day. The practice asks very little of the body. You lie down, props hold you in long supported shapes, and a voice or a slow flow guides you back to stillness. The collection is small and steady, with a few studios in Rive, Les Acacias and Eaux-Vives where it gathers.

Where to start: Performer - Lagree Hot Pilates Hot Yoga and Reformer Studio in Rive, Deva yoga in Les Acacias or Soma House in Eaux-Vives

It suits you if

  • you want to rest after work
  • you prefer slow, supported poses
  • you are new to yoga nidra

When the classes run

Most of the deep rest classes in Geneva start in the evening, and more than half fall after 6pm. A smaller group runs in the early afternoon, from about 1:05pm, and a few fall on weekends. Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday are the days when the collection is busiest, with 6:30pm and 6pm the most common start times.

Classes usually run about 50 minutes, though some stretch longer, such as the 90-minute Chill Flow + Nidra at Deva yoga.

What the classes are

The collection leans on three kinds of practice. Restorative yoga holds the body in long, props-supported poses, and it appears in more than half of the classes. Yoga nidra, a guided practice of lying still and listening to a voice, is found in about a third. Gentle and restore classes make up much of the rest, with a few built around sleep.

Performer - Lagree Hot Pilates Hot Yoga and Reformer Studio in Rive offers a restorative hot yoga class, a useful option for anyone who likes warmth. Deva yoga in Les Acacias blends a slow flow with nidra, while Soma House in Eaux-Vives runs the L'Occitane Sleep Club, a 60-minute session on rest and sleep.

Deep rest: questions and answers

When do most people practice deep rest in Geneva?

Most of the deep rest classes in Geneva fall in the evening, with start times that run up to 6:30pm, and a smaller group in the early afternoon from about 1:05pm. Nothing starts before 9am, so this collection is built for after work rather than the start of the day.

Is deep rest suitable for beginners?

Yes, the restorative and yoga nidra classes here are gentle by design. Chill Flow + Nidra at Deva yoga pairs a slow flow with yoga nidra over 90 minutes, and a restorative hot yoga class at Performer in Rive is 50 minutes long. A beginner can start with the shorter, slower options.

What is the difference between yoga nidra and restorative yoga?

Yoga nidra is a guided practice of lying still and following a voice through the body, usually without any movement. Restorative yoga uses props like bolsters and blankets to hold the body in long, supported poses. Both ask you to stop working and simply rest, which is why they suit a tired evening.

Where in Geneva can I practice deep rest?

Deep rest classes in Geneva are spread across a handful of studios. Performer - Lagree Hot Pilates Hot Yoga and Reformer Studio in Rive, Deva yoga in Les Acacias and Soma House in Eaux-Vives host most of them. The collection also gathers around the neighborhoods of Rive, Les Acacias and Eaux-Vives.

Can I use a pass for deep rest classes?

ClassPass is accepted for a share of these classes, roughly a fifth of the collection. Other classes ask for a direct booking with the studio, so check the entry for each class you are considering before you plan your evening.

Is there a class focused on sleep?

Soma House offers L'Occitane Sleep Club, a 60-minute session that combines yoga nidra and deep relaxation with a workshop on sleep. The class is set up around sleep itself and is one of the more distinctive entries in the collection.
