What the practice looks like

Most of the classes at Mind & Motion are classical Pilates on the reformer and mat, with a few sessions that move toward more energy. Classical classes follow the traditional repertoire and begin on the mat before moving onto the springs, so the work is steady and easy to follow. Jump + Flow adds 20 to 25 minutes of jumping on the reformer, which gives the practice a more cardiovascular feel.

The studio also offers strength training and a women's only classical class, so the timetable covers a few different goals within the same reformer-based approach.

How the week runs

The studio is a short walk from the Hancock Park neighborhood, and the timetable is weighted toward the first part of the day. Morning classes make up more than half of the week, with starts from 7am and busy slots at 9am and noon. Evening classes begin around 5pm and run until 6:30pm.

The classes are a common length of 55 minutes, with strength training running to 60. Mind & Motion works with about ten facilitators, and the studio is a good place for those who want a predictable rhythm on the reformer.

Mind & Motion: questions and answers

How long are the classes at Mind & Motion?

Most classes run 55 minutes, and the studio also offers 60-minute strength training. The day usually starts on the mat before moving onto the reformer, so the rhythm of a class stays steady from the first exercise to the last.

Is there a women's only class?

Yes. Mind & Motion offers a women's only classical 1.0 class on the reformer and mat, alongside its mixed classes. The rest of the timetable is open to everyone and is built around the same reformer work.

When do most people practice here?

Most classes start in the morning, and more than half of the week falls before noon. Morning starts begin at 7am, and the busiest start times are 9am and noon, with a second cluster at 5pm and 5:30pm. Evening classes run until 6:30pm.

What kinds of classes can I expect?

Most of the classes are Pilates on the reformer, and a few lean toward cardio. Reformer Jump + Flow spends 20 to 25 minutes jumping against the resistance of the springs, and a small number of sessions are marked for experienced students.

Where should a newcomer start?

Classical 1.0 and Classical 2.0 are good starting points for people who want to learn the classical Pilates repertoire step by step. Those who are new to reformer work can ask the facilitator which level suits them before the first session.

Who leads the classes?

Wendy Quinn, Kate Warner, Elisheva Berman, Hayley Hirsch and Sofia Klass lead many of the classes, along with a wider team of about ten facilitators. Each one brings a slightly different approach to the reformer, so it is worth trying a few to find a good match.
