Pilates on the reformer

Pilates is the practice at the heart of powerhouse pilates, and nearly all of its classes are taught on the reformer. The reformer is a sliding carriage with springs and straps, and it asks for control through every movement. Classes are grouped by level, from beginner and beginner/intermediate through intermediate, with a few reformer flow sessions open to all levels.

Most of the schedule is aimed at people who already have some experience, and more than half of the classes are labeled that way. Newcomers will find beginner sessions and a small number of first-class-ever options, and the facilitators are the people to ask when deciding where to start.

The shape of the week

Classes at powerhouse pilates run from 8am to 6pm. Mornings and evenings each take up about a third of the schedule, and midday covers about a fifth. Weekend classes are fewer, about one in ten. The most common start times are 10am, noon, 5pm and 6pm.

The studio is in Mar Vista, which is where you will find it on Venice Boulevard. The facilitators who teach the most classes here include Barbara Banuelos, Camden Hartman, Ania Krawiec, Roxanne Saldana, Judy Shin and Gabriela Marulanda, so you can get to know a few names over the course of a month.
