Desk body in Manchester

Manchester's desk body collection gathers reformer Pilates classes built for the back, neck, shoulders and hips that a desk job tends to tighten. The movement is slow and controlled, using springs for resistance, and the work is strength-led with a strong pace. Most of the classes sit in Spinningfields and Didsbury, and the timetable runs from early mornings to the evening.

What the classes focus on

Nearly every class in this collection is reformer Pilates, and nearly all of them are strength-led and strong in energy. The work centers on the hips, upper body and abdominals, with some sessions asking for slower counts and more resistance. A few classes lean toward mobility, stretch and flexibility, and a small number name the back directly.

The example sessions show the range. One is a POWER class on heavier springs with slower counts. Another is a stretch and core flow that lengthens the muscles while working the abdominals. Both run for about 45 minutes, which is the typical length across the collection.

Where and when to practice

Kore Studios in Spinningfields and PXY Reformer Pilates in Didsbury have the most classes, and about ten facilitators lead the sessions across them. Holly Leckie, Lucy Dyson, Amrita, Maygen Robinson, Lucy Warburton, Madison Crowshaw and Charlotte Marsh teach the most classes here.

The timetable spreads across the day. About a third of the classes start in the morning and about a third in the evening, with a smaller share at midday and before 9am. The busiest start times are 5:30pm, 7:30pm, 1pm and 11am, and Tuesday and Friday carry the most classes. No classes run at weekends.

Desk body: questions and answers

Is this collection good for beginners?

Most of the classes in this collection are reformer Pilates, and nearly all of them are strength-led and strong in pace. Many are pitched at people with some experience, so a first session with a complete beginner may feel demanding. Checking the level and description before booking helps.

Which studios should I look at first?

Kore Studios in Spinningfields and PXY Reformer Pilates in Didsbury have the most classes here. Both run reformer work, and the Kore Studios timetable includes a women's only session.

When do most people practice?

Classes start as early as 7:30am and run until 7:30pm. About a third fall in the morning and about a third in the evening, with a smaller share before 9am and at midday. The busiest start times are 5:30pm, 7:30pm, 1pm and 11am, and Tuesday and Friday are the busiest days.

How long are the classes?

Most classes last about 45 minutes, which fits well into a lunch break or before or after work. Morning and evening sessions both give you a way to loosen up after a long stretch at a desk.

What kind of movement will I do?

The classes are built around reformer work, using the springs to add resistance while you move. The example sessions focus on the upper body and abdominals, or on lengthening the muscles while activating the core. A few classes also stress mobility, stretch, flexibility or the back.

How do I choose a first class?

Most classes here are not pitched at complete beginners, so it helps to look at the description and level before you book. If you are newer to reformer, look for sessions that mention a gentler pace or stretch focus.
