Deep rest in Nice

Deep rest in Nice is mostly yoga nidra and restorative yoga, practiced in the evening after the working day. The classes slow everything down: long holds, props, and a guided rest that asks very little of you beyond lying still. Two studios, Kali Yoga Nice in Vieux Nice and Superstudio in Mantega, carry most of the collection, so you can choose between the old town and the newer side of the city without losing the feeling of the practice.

Where to start: Kali Yoga Nice in Vieux Nice or Superstudio in Mantega

It suits you if

  • you want to slow down after a long working day
  • you prefer gentle, props-supported classes
  • you like guided rest more than strong movement

What the classes feel like

Nearly every class in this collection is a yoga practice, and most are built around yoga nidra, the guided rest where you lie down, follow a voice and let the body settle. Restorative and yin appear often, with long, supported holds. Vinyasa turns up in some classes, where a steady flow leads into a longer rest at the end.

The word restore comes up often in how these classes are described, and that is the feeling they aim for. You can expect blankets, bolsters and a slow pace, and the practice is generally open to all levels.

Where to practice and with whom

Kali Yoga Nice in Vieux Nice has a number of these classes, including Vinyasa and Nidra Yoga and Yin and Nidra Yoga, both about 90 minutes long. Superstudio in Mantega offers Supertranquilité, a 75 minute class built around recovery postures.

Annie, Julien Voisin and Lisa lead the most classes here. Starting with one of the Kali Yoga Nice evenings gives you a sense of the old town rhythm, while Superstudio is the place to go if you prefer the Mantega side of the city.

Deep rest: questions and answers

When do most people practice deep rest in Nice?

Most of the deep rest classes in Nice run in the evening, with starts between 6:15pm and 7:15pm. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are the busiest days, and the usual start is 7pm or 6:30pm. Nothing is scheduled at midday, in the morning or on weekends.

What kinds of deep rest classes are there?

Yoga nidra is the style that leads this collection, and restorative and yin come close behind. Vinyasa appears too, often in a class that moves into a guided rest. The classes are mostly unhurried, with long holds and props, and they suit a body that has been working hard all day.

Which studios should I look at first?

Kali Yoga Nice in Vieux Nice and Superstudio in Mantega have the most classes in this collection. Both are good places to start if you want to compare how the same kind of rest is offered in two different parts of the city.

Are there classes for beginners?

Yes, a few are, such as Supertranquilité at Superstudio, which is described as a way to ease off the week's pressure through deep recovery postures and is open to everyone. Restorative and yin classes are generally gentle, so they are a good fit for a first visit.

How long are the classes?

Most classes run about 90 minutes, and a few are a little shorter, closer to 75 minutes. Arriving a few minutes early gives you time to settle before the start.

Who leads these classes?

Annie, Julien Voisin and Lisa lead the most classes in this collection. Each brings a different approach to yoga nidra and restorative work, so it is worth trying more than one.
