What long holds means here

The idea behind long holds is simple. A pose is taken and kept, often for several minutes, so the body has time to release what it is holding. In Ubud this is taught mostly through yin, where the poses are practiced low to the ground and the breath is the anchor, and through restorative yoga, which uses more support so the body can rest fully into a shape.

A smaller share of the classes blends this with a slower hatha approach, paying attention to alignment and longer holds rather than rapid movement.

When the classes run

Most of the classes run in the evening, and about half begin in the morning. Later starts cluster around 5:30pm and 7:15pm, while earlier sessions start at 10:30am. Nothing begins before 9am, and few classes fall at midday or on weekends.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday are the days when the most classes run, so those are the easiest days to find a session.

Where to practice

The Yoga Barn is where most of the long holds classes are held, in the Peliatan neighborhood. Its line up includes yin yoga, restorative yin, yin yoga healing and a strong slow flow that moves between long holds and dynamic vinyasa sequences. Most classes run 90 minutes, with several yin sessions at 75 minutes.

There are no passes to buy for these classes, so you can book each session on its own.

Long holds in Ubud: questions and answers

What are long holds in yoga?

Long holds are postures kept for a longer stretch than in a typical flow, often several minutes. In Ubud the style is mostly taught through yin and restorative classes, where the holds are the point of the practice rather than a pause between movements.

Is long holds good for beginners?

Most classes in Ubud are yin, restorative or a slower hatha, so the practice tends to suit people who want to ease into long holds. Several classes are open to all levels, and the facilitators guide the holds clearly enough that you can follow along.

When do most long holds classes run?

Most classes in Ubud run in the evening, with about half falling after 5pm and the latest starts at 7:15pm. Morning classes are also common, starting as early as 10:30am, while nothing begins before 9am.

Where can I practice long holds in Ubud?

The Yoga Barn in Peliatan has the most classes in this style, and it is where most of the sessions are held. Its yin, restorative and strong slow flow classes all include a good share of long holds.

How long are the classes?

Most classes run 90 minutes, with some yin sessions at 75 minutes. Longer sessions give the holds more room to settle, so it helps to plan for the full class.

Which style should I start with?

Yin yoga is the most common route into long holds here. Its poses are taken low to the ground so gravity can help you settle in, and the focus stays on the breath. Restorative classes follow a similar pattern with more support.

Are the classes taught in English?

Most classes are taught in English, and the facilitators are used to guiding a room through extended holds. Read the class description to see the level and the emphasis before you book.

Who leads the long holds classes?

Classes are mostly led by a group of facilitators, including Chocolako, Eka Kailash, Tina Nance, Byron de Marse, Chris Walker and Lawrence Jay. Each brings a slightly different approach to holding a pose, so it can be worth trying more than one.
