Desk body in Vancouver

Desk body gathers classes in Vancouver for the back, neck, shoulders and hips, the parts a desk job tends to hold tight. Most of the sessions are slow yin yoga, with long floor-based holds and gentle movement that prepares the body for them. Practice happens mostly in the evening, with a few sessions at midday and on weekends.

Where to start: STRETCH Studio in Chinatown, WEWELL in Yaletown or Ritual Urban Retreat in Lower Robson

It suits you if

  • you sit at a desk most of the day
  • you want slow, floor-based stretching in the evening

What the classes focus on

The focus is clear: hips come up in nearly every class, and most sessions are yin yoga. Many classes pair long, quiet holds with functional movement that prepares the body for them. Mobility and stretch sessions are a steady part of the mix, and a smaller share brings in breathwork or a more energetic, strong pace.

STRETCH Studio in Chinatown offers a run of Active Yin classes, including Hips & Splits, Shoulders and Hips, each about an hour long. Ritual Urban Retreat in Lower Robson runs Mobility + Release, a slow, entirely floor-based class built around how the body moves through everyday sitting, driving and screen time. WEWELL in Yaletown offers a series of Zen Room sessions that focus on Active Yin for hips, splits and shoulders.

When and where classes run

Classes run mostly in the evening, with more than half starting in the evening window and the latest start at 7:45pm. Midday classes, starting from noon, make up about a third of the collection, and a similar share falls on weekends. Monday, Saturday and Sunday are the busiest days.

Most classes run about an hour. Sessions are spread across Chinatown, Yaletown and Lower Robson, so a visit can fit around a lunch break or after work, depending on which studio is closest to you.

Desk body: questions and answers

What kinds of classes are in this collection?

Most of the classes in this collection are yoga, and most of them are yin. The rest lean toward mobility and stretch, with some breathwork and a few strength-leaning sessions. Hips come up in nearly every class, and neck and shoulders in a smaller share.

When do most people practice?

Most classes start in the evening. Noon, 6pm, 7pm and 7:45pm are the times that come up most often, and the latest start is 7:45pm. Mornings and the hours before 9am are not part of this collection, so a practice before work is not what this page offers.

Are there classes on weekends?

Yes. Classes take place across the week, and Monday, Saturday and Sunday are the busiest days. Roughly a third of the classes fall on a weekend, so a Saturday or Sunday session is easy to find.

Is this collection good for someone new to yoga?

Many of the classes are labeled all levels, and the Active Yin sequences at STRETCH Studio are built to be practiced by anyone who wants to work on the hips, shoulders or splits. Most sessions run about an hour, which gives you time to settle in before the longer holds begin.

Which studios and neighborhoods should I look at first?

STRETCH Studio in Chinatown, WEWELL in Yaletown and Ritual Urban Retreat in Lower Robson have the most classes in this collection. Risto Duggan and Anna lead the largest share of the sessions. Chinatown, Yaletown and Lower Robson are where most of the practice gathers.

Do I need a pass to book?

Yes, the page does not show class passes for these classes, so check each studio's booking details directly before you go. The classes themselves are usually about an hour long.
