About When Nature Calls - Center For Self Optimisation

When Nature Calls is a small studio on the Prinsengracht, in the canal district of Grachtengordel-West. Its timetable is built around the start of the working day, with many classes before 9am and a steady run of midday sessions. Pilates is at the center of the schedule, often paired with matcha, mindfulness or breathwork, so a class can feel like a full morning rather than a single exercise.

It suits you if

  • you want to practice before work
  • Pilates is the practice you come back to
  • you like classes that pair movement with a slower ritual

How the week runs

The studio's timetable leans toward the start of the day. About half of its classes fall in the morning, and about a third begin before 9am, with the earliest start at 7:45am. Midday sessions around noon and 12:30pm are the other busy window, while evenings and weekends are much quieter.

The Tuesday, Thursday and Friday timetable carries the most classes, so these are the days to check first if you want the widest choice.

What is taught and by whom

Pilates is the backbone of the schedule, and several classes combine it with matcha, mindfulness or cacao. Strong and mobility classes make up another large share, and a smaller number of restore, meditation and sound bath sessions sit alongside them. Breathwork and reiki-based classes are also part of the offer.

The studio's facilitators teach a wide range of these classes, and a couple of dozen of them lead sessions here. Andrea Gršković, Nada Mesqui and Maria Arnaoutaki have some of the most classes, and Audrey Hendrix, Kim Konsten and Kasia Kayara are also regular names on the timetable.

When Nature Calls - Center For Self Optimisation: questions and answers

When do most people practice here?

Most classes at when nature calls run in the morning, and about a third start before 9am. The earliest start in the four-week window is 7:45am, so the studio suits people who want to practice before work. Midday classes, around 12:30pm and noon, also draw a steady crowd.

What kinds of classes are on offer?

Pilates leads the timetable, making up about a third of classes. Strong classes come next at about a fifth, alongside mobility and stretch. Meditation, restore, flow, breathwork, mindfulness and sound bath appear less often but are part of the mix.

Can I take classes with a pass?

Yes. Urban Sports Club and ClassPass are both accepted, and more than half of the classes can be booked this way. This makes it easier to try a few different classes without committing to a single membership.

Is it a good place to start if I am new to yoga or Pilates?

Yes, many classes are open to all levels, and a few are designed for beginners. The Pre-Work Day Pilates and the Morning Strong Flow Pilates are good starting points if you are new to Pilates or flow. Typical classes run about an hour.

Where is the studio and how long are the classes?

The studio is on Prinsengracht 581 in Grachtengordel-West, one of the canal-side neighborhoods of central Amsterdam. Its classes range from short lunchtime sessions of about 45 minutes to longer workshops of up to two hours.
