Strong and sweaty in Burlington

Burlington has a collection of classes built around strength and heat, most of them rooted in Pilates. Many are taught on the reformer, a machine of springs and bars that adds resistance to every movement, while others work on the mat. Most sessions run about 50 minutes and many start early in the morning, so the day can begin with a hard practice.

Where to start: The Body Lab in Twin Orchards, Peace of Mind Pilates in Essex or Adi Yoga Studio

It suits you if

  • you like working hard on the reformer
  • you prefer early morning sessions before work
  • you want strength work without a reformer

What the classes focus on

The weight of this collection falls on Pilates. Nearly all the classes are Pilates in some form, and reformer appears in most of them. The reformer classes are built around springs and bars that add resistance, so a movement that looks simple can become demanding quickly. Alongside these sit a smaller number of classes that name strength, focus, core and pelvic floor work, and a few yoga classes, including power yoga and power flow.

The energy of the collection is strong and sweaty. About half the classes describe themselves in those terms, so the schedule leans toward sessions that build strength and raise the heart rate.

When to practice

Classes start as early as 6am and run through the evening, with the latest starts at 6pm. More than half of the classes take place in the morning, and a large share begin before 9am, which makes early practice a natural fit for this collection. Midday and evening classes are fewer, and weekend sessions make up about a fifth of the schedule.

The busiest days are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. The most common start times are 8:15am, 9:15am, noon and 5:30pm, so a practice can fit before work, at lunch or after the working day.

Strong and sweaty: questions and answers

What kind of classes make up this collection?

Most classes here are Pilates, and reformer is the style that appears most often. Strong and sweat are the feelings that run through much of the schedule, so the classes tend to suit people who want to work hard and feel it afterward.

When do most people practice?

Most classes run in the morning, and a large share start before 9am, with busy starts at 8:15am and 9:15am. Evening classes are fewer, with a cluster around 5:30pm. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday are the busiest days.

Which studios have the most classes?

The Body Lab in Twin Orchards and Peace of Mind Pilates in Essex have the most classes. Adi Yoga Studio also offers mat-based strength and flow classes.

Is it good for beginners?

Yes, but only a few of the classes are marked for all levels. Many of the strength-focused sessions are intense, so a newcomer may want to start with a class that describes itself as lighter or with the basics.

How long are the classes?

Most classes run about 50 minutes. Adi Yoga Studio's mat and flow classes run closer to an hour.

What is a good example of a strong, sweaty class here?

Athletic Reformer at The Body Lab is described as a fast-paced full body class that keeps the heart rate up. Signature MatSculpt, also at The Body Lab, is a mat-based class that brings Pilates principles together with strength work and needs no reformer.
