About Dwell Somatic Studio

Dwell Somatic Studio sits in the Makers Studio on Noisette Boulevard in North Charleston, a shared workshop building rather than a standalone wellness space. The practice here leans toward somatics: slow, attentive movement that works with stiffness, posture and tension. Yoga, Pilates and a few classes that go beyond the mat fill out the week.

It suits you if

  • you carry tension in your back, hips or shoulders
  • you prefer slow, attentive movement to fast flow
  • you can practice around the middle of a working day

What the classes work on

Most classes at Dwell are somatic, which means they move slowly and pay close attention to how the body feels from the inside. Release is the feeling most classes aim for, and about a fifth are yoga. Pilates appears in a smaller share of the schedule, and a few classes carry a stronger or more playful energy.

The body focus is clear. Back, neck and shoulders, and core and pelvic floor each show up across the timetable, so someone with a specific area of stiffness will find more than one class that addresses it.

How the week is shaped

The studio's week spreads across the day. About a third of classes fall at midday, a third in the morning and a fifth in the evening. Lunch classes make the studio easy to fit into a workday, and the evening classes give a second window for people who practice after work. Weekends hold a substantial share of the schedule, and Sunday, Friday and Tuesday see the most activity.

Classes usually run an hour, and some are shorter at fifty minutes. The studio does not sell passes, so each visit is booked as a single class.

Dwell Somatic Studio: questions and answers

What kind of classes does Dwell Somatic Studio teach?

Most of the classes here are somatic, meaning they work with slow, attentive movement to ease stiffness and tension. Yoga and Pilates are part of the mix too, and the studio runs a few classes that go beyond the mat.

When do most people practice here?

Classes start as early as 9:30am and run through the evening, with the last start at 6pm. The day is split fairly evenly between morning, midday and evening, and a good share of the classes fall on weekends. Sunday, Friday and Tuesday are the busiest days.

Is this studio good for beginners?

Yes. Several classes are built around the body rather than a level of experience, including lunch yoga for stiff bodies and yoga for tight and tense muscles. Clinical somatics essentials for posture and stiffness is a clear place to begin for someone new to this kind of work.

Where is the studio located?

Dwell is in North Charleston, at the Makers Studio on Noisette Boulevard. It is a space shared with other makers, so the studio sits among workshops rather than in a dedicated wellness building.

What do the classes focus on?

A lot of the work centers on the back, hips, neck and shoulders. Classes such as clinical somatics for shoulders, yin for hips and back, and yoga for tight and tense bodies show that focus. Classes usually run about an hour, and some are fifty minutes.

Who leads the classes?

The studio's classes are led by a small group of facilitators, with Beth Cosi, Zaria Livingston and Anne Nichols teaching the most. Each brings a different emphasis within the same somatic approach.
