Sunday sound in Copenhagen

Sound baths on Sunday are the thread through this part of Copenhagen's practice. Most of the sessions are built around gong, Tibetan singing bowls and other resonant instruments, lying still while the sound moves around the room. Sunday is the day the collection is busiest, and most of the sessions fall in the evening, so it suits a slow end to the weekend.

Where to start: KAILO yoga in Middelalderbyen, Dóttir Hot Yoga in Nordhavn or VITALIV.YOGA in Frederiksberg

It suits you if

  • you want a slow end to the weekend
  • you prefer lying still and listening

What a sunday sound class is

Sound bath is the practice that defines this collection, and nearly all the classes are built around it. Gong and bowls feature in more than half, and the sessions often sit inside a yin, restore or somatic class. A few add infrared heat, and a smaller number are vinyasa or qigong, so the mix is more varied than the name suggests.

KAILO yoga in Middelalderbyen runs a soundbath class of about 70 minutes, which is close to the typical length across the collection. The instruments are the ones people expect: Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, crystal bowls, drums and rain sticks. The emphasis is on being bathed in sound rather than on any particular posture.

When the classes run

Sunday carries the most classes in this collection, with start times between 10am and 7pm. The most common starts are around 10am, 10:45am, 6pm and 7pm, so a morning session and an evening one are both easy to find. Almost none of the classes start before 9am, and none run at midday.

On Sundays the studios in Nordhavn and Frederiksberg take much of the schedule. Dóttir Hot Yoga in Nordhavn pairs yin with somatic movement and red light therapy in a signature class of about an hour. ILUMA Yoga in Frederiksberg offers a longer vinyasa and sound session, 90 minutes rather than the usual hour, once a month.

Sunday sound: questions and answers

When do sunday sound classes start?

Most of the sunday sound classes in Copenhagen are on Sunday itself, and the day is the busiest for this collection. Start times run from 10am to 7pm, and the most common starts are around 10am, 10:45am, 6pm and 7pm. Check the studio's own timetable for the exact week you plan to come.

What kind of sound classes are on offer?

Sound baths are the core of this collection, and nearly all of the classes are built around them. Gong and bowls appear in more than half, and the sound often sits inside a yin, restore or somatic class. Some classes add infrared heat, and a few are vinyasa or qigong.

Is a sound bath good for a first time?

Yes, and some are open to all levels. You do not need to know yoga or meditation to lie down and listen. KAILO yoga runs a soundbath class of about 70 minutes, a typical length across the collection, so it is a practical place to start.

Are these classes suitable for beginners?

A little under half of the classes are open to all levels, and a good number lean toward restore and calm. Classes at Dóttir Hot Yoga, for example, combine yin with somatic practice and red light therapy, so it is worth reading the description before you book.

Where in Copenhagen do sunday sound classes take place?

The collection is spread across a few neighborhoods. Middelalderbyen, Nordhavn and Frederiksberg have the most classes, with KAILO yoga in Middelalderbyen, Dóttir Hot Yoga in Nordhavn, and ILUMA Yoga and VITALIV.YOGA in Frederiksberg among the studios that run the most sessions.

Can I book these classes with a pass?

Around a third of the classes can be booked with ClassPass. Everything else is booked directly with the studio, so check the studio's own page for prices and booking before you go.
