tanzatelier is a school for artistic dance in the Groß Borstel neighborhood of Hamburg. Its week is built around dance: modern dance, jazz, lyrical and contemporary barre sit alongside gyrokinesis and mobility work. Most of the day's classes fall in the evening, which suits people who practice after work.

What the studio teaches
The studio teaches dance as a form of artistic expression. Modern dance and lyrical classes focus on flowing, soft movement and expressive choreography, with broad steps and phrases that are built up over the session. Jazz modern fusion is more rhythmic and dynamic, with sharp, strong movement. Contemporary barre brings the basic technique of classical ballet into a contemporary setting.
Alongside the dance classes are gyrokinesis, which combines breathing, dance and yoga-based movement into flowing, three-dimensional sequences, and a flexibility and mobility class that works through a full-body flow. Both suit people who want to move with attention to the body.
How the week runs
Classes take place throughout the week, with the busiest days being Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Most sessions run for an hour, and some longer classes run for 75 or 90 minutes. Classes are most common in the evening, and a smaller number take place at midday and on weekends.
The studio also runs a dedicated early dance program for young children and classes for children from 10 years old, so the space is used across a range of ages.

What kinds of classes does tanzatelier offer?
Yes. The studio is a school for artistic dance, so most of its classes are dance classes: modern dance, jazz, lyrical, contemporary barre and beginner pointe work. Alongside these there is gyrokinesis, which mixes breathing, dance and yoga-based movement, and a mobility class built around a full-body flow.
When do most people practice at tanzatelier?
Most classes run in the evening, and more than half of the classes start in that part of the day. Starts are spread across the late afternoon and evening, with the busiest times around 3pm, 4pm, 5:30pm and 8:20pm. Classes are mostly on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Mornings are few, and there are no classes before 9am.
Are there classes for children?
Yes. Alongside the adult classes there are classes for children, including early dance for ages 3 to 5 and modern dance for children from 10 years old. Several of the regular facilitators teach across these groups.
Is tanzatelier suitable for beginners?
Several classes are open to all levels, and the contemporary barre and mobility classes are a good place to begin with movement that is physically accessible. Lyrical and jazz modern fusion suit people who already have some dance experience. A beginner pointe class is offered for absolute beginners who want to start pointe work in a structured way.
