The Root is a fitness center, yoga studio, childbirth education center and peer community made for pregnant people and new parents, set on Lanatt Street in Sacramento. Its practices sit close to the everyday life of a growing family: prenatal and postpartum yoga, strength work for the pelvic floor and core, and support groups for parents. The space feels built around the people who come to it.
It suits you if
- you are pregnant and want prenatal yoga or strength work
- you are a new parent looking for postpartum core and pelvic floor care
- you prefer mornings and weekends for your practice

What the classes are
Yoga is the largest part of what The Root offers, with prenatal and postpartum classes sitting alongside general yoga and restorative practice. Strength training and functional fitness appear as well, many of them designed for pregnancy or the months after birth. Baby and me yoga and mom walks show how the studio includes children in the practice.
Most classes last about an hour. Restorative classes and pelvic floor work suit a slower, more deliberate pace, while strength classes ask for more effort.
More than movement
The Root is set up as a peer community as much as a studio. Alongside the movement classes it offers childbirth education, breastfeeding and pumping support, and weekly or monthly peer support groups for parents. Membership gives access to all of it.
The studio also holds events and free talks, so the community side of the place runs throughout the week.
The Root: Birth Babies & Beyond: questions and answers
When do most people practice at The Root?
Most classes run in the morning, and a good share sit on weekends. Mornings start as early as 9am and the latest class begins at 6:30pm, so there is room for an early practice or an evening one. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday are the busiest days.
Are there classes for pregnant people and new parents?
Yes. Prenatal yoga, prenatal functional fitness and postpartum pelvic floor and core flow are among the classes, and the space is set up for pregnant people and new parents. Some classes, like baby and me yoga, bring the baby along.
Is there a gentle class to start with?
Restorative yoga is one of the calmer options, a class that lets the body rest and slow down. Most classes last about an hour, so a short practice fits easily into a day.
Are there support groups and classes beyond exercise?
The Root also runs childbirth classes, peer support groups and events for parents. Among the groups listed are a new dad support group and a breastfeeding and pumping essentials course that takes two hours. Mom walks with Kelly runs for 90 minutes.
Who leads the classes?
Most of the classes are led by a team of about ten facilitators. Kavisa, Galina, Salinda, Maggie and Gloria lead the most classes, and Taylor, Rose, Kelly and Front are also regular names on the schedule.
