Heat in Maui

Hot and infrared classes in Maui are built around warmth. Most of the schedule is heated yoga, with vinyasa and power styles leading the week. The classes gather in a few studios, mostly in Pu驶unene and Makawao, and evenings carry the greatest share of practice.

What the heat asks of you

Heat is the thread that runs through this collection. Nearly all the classes are hot yoga, and many of them are power or vinyasa styles that keep the body moving. The heat asks for a slower start, a bottle of water close by and a willingness to rest in child's pose when needed.

For a gentler entry, the restorative and slower heated classes offer the same warmth with more time spent still. Some of them pair the heat with sound, so the session settles rather than builds.

How the week is shaped

The evening is the heart of the week, with more than half of the classes starting after the workday. Mornings follow, and a few classes begin before 9am. Midday is almost empty, and weekends are a quiet part of the schedule.

Tuesday, Thursday and Friday are the days when the most classes run. Blue Mango Yoga in Pu驶unene and Mangala Yoga in Makawao carry most of the practice, and a couple of dozen facilitators lead the classes between them, among them Ash J, Jany Slay and Anne Koza.

Heat: questions and answers

What kinds of classes are there?

Most classes are hot yoga, and nearly all of them are heated. Vinyasa and power yoga make up much of the schedule, so the pace tends to be steady and sweaty rather than slow. A few gentler and restorative classes sit alongside them.

When do most people practice?

Most classes run in the evening, with more than half starting after the workday. Mornings are the next busiest, and a smaller group of classes start before 9am. Midday is quiet, and weekends hold only about one class in ten.

Which studios should I know about?

Blue Mango Yoga in Pu驶unene and Mangala Yoga in Makawao have the most classes. Blue Mango offers hot power vinyasa, hot vinyasa and a hot restore class with sound, while Mangala has a heated slow flow.

How long are the classes, and when do they start?

Classes usually run about 60 minutes. Start times reach from 8am in the morning to 6:15pm in the evening, and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday are the busiest days.

Is this suited to beginners?

Many of the classes are vinyasa-based, so the sequences move from pose to pose with the breath. Restorative and slower heated classes are also part of the mix, which gives a newcomer a gentler option to begin with.
