Strong and sweaty in Maui

Maui has a good number of classes built around strength and heat, most of them in yoga. Vinyasa and power yoga lead the mix, with hot classes that bring real sweat and strength-focused flows that work the whole body. Much of the practice takes place in the morning, so a strong session can fit before the day begins.

Where to start: Blue Mango Yoga in Pu驶unene, Blue Mango Yoga in Haiku or Maui Powerhouse Gym in Kihei

It suits you if

  • you want to build strength early in the day
  • you like hot, sweaty vinyasa and power classes
  • you prefer strength work with Pilates or barre

Where the heat and strength are

Blue Mango Yoga is the studio with the most of these classes, offering hot power vinyasa, power vinyasa, hot strength and mobility flow, and hot strength and stretch flow. Its hot vinyasa and yoga church power vinyasa classes run about an hour each. Classes are spread across its Pu驶unene and Haiku locations.

Mangala Yoga in Makawao offers yoga sculpt, a class that brings strength work into a yoga format. Maui Yoga and Dance Shala in Paia adds power vinyasa to the mix, so you can find sweat-heavy practice in several parts of the island.

When the sessions run

Most classes take place in the morning, and roughly a third start before 9am. Evening classes are fewer, and the latest start is 6pm. Thursday, Friday and Monday are the days when the most classes run.

Pilates and barre also appear here, mostly at Maui Powerhouse Gym in Kihei. Its classes run about 50 minutes, while the yoga classes at Blue Mango usually run about an hour, so you can choose a shorter session when you want one.
