Strong and sweaty in Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara has a focused collection of classes that build strength and bring a good sweat. Pilates leads the way here, often on the reformer and often in heated or infrared rooms. The sessions are concentrated in a few studios, and most of them take place in the morning, which makes this a practice that fits a day that starts early.

Strength and heat on the reformer

Most of the strength classes here are Pilates-based. At Pilates & Or you will find infrared reformer sessions, strength reformer classes, and combinations like infrared barre with sculpt. Pilates Cult offers a 50/50 weights and flow class, and Mighty Pilates Santa Barbara runs a strength re:form session. Grass Roots Pilates in the Westside adds jumpboard work to its reformer classes.

For core and pelvic floor focus, look for the heated abs and booty mat class at Pilates & Or. Barre and mat Pilates appear less often, so they are worth seeking out specifically.

When the classes run

Most classes take place in the morning, with the earliest starts at 7am and busiest times at 9am and 9:30am. Midday classes, around noon, make up a fifth of the schedule, and the evening starts cluster around 5:30pm. Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays see the most classes.

Most classes run for an hour. A few of the intro and drop-in sessions are shorter, around 30 minutes, and suit a first visit.

Strong and sweaty: questions and answers

What kinds of classes are on offer in Santa Barbara?

Pilates is the clear lead here, and nearly all the classes are Pilates in some form. Strength and strong classes come next, with many running on the reformer. Core and pelvic floor work, sweat-focused sessions and barre appear less often.

Which studios should I look at for strength and sweat?

Pilates & Or runs the most classes and includes infrared sessions, reformer strength work and sculpt-style combinations. Mighty Pilates Santa Barbara, Pilates Cult and Grass Roots Pilates in the Westside also offer strength-led classes, including a reformer jumpboard class at Grass Roots.

When do most of these classes take place?

Most classes start in the morning, and more than half of the schedule falls before noon. Midday and weekend sessions each make up about a fifth of classes, and evening starts are less common. The busiest start times are noon, 9am, 9:30am and 5:30pm.

Is there a class for someone who has never tried Pilates?

Yes. Pilates & Or offers a beginner reformer class, and Mighty Pilates Santa Barbara has an intro to Pilates session. Both are a good place to start before moving on to strength or infrared classes.

How long are the classes?

Most classes run for about an hour, with some shorter options around 30 to 50 minutes. Infrared and reformer sessions at Pilates & Or are usually a full hour.

Who leads these classes?

Most sessions are led by a small group of facilitators who teach across several studios. Sean Kohan, Yvonne, Lin Samuelsen and Marissa Daisy are among those who teach the most classes.
