Sunday sound in Sydney

Sunday sound in Sydney gathers around sound baths, most of them paired with yoga and most of them built on yin. The sessions run about an hour, and most fall in the evening or on weekends, with Sunday the day most people practice. Bondi Beach, Neutral Bay, Mosman and Redfern are where the classes are, and the studios there tend to mix gong, bowls and live music with slow, held postures.

Where to start: Humming Puppy Yoga Sydney in Redfern, Sarana Bondi - Yoga & Pilates in Bondi Beach or Power Living Yoga Neutral Bay Studio in Neutral Bay

What a Sunday session feels like

Sound baths here are mostly yoga and sound together. Yin is the common thread, with postures held for long periods to release tension and support flexibility, then a calming session of gong, bowls or live music. The Yin & Sacred Rest class at Sarana Bondi in Bondi Beach follows this pattern, and so does Yin + Live Sound at Power Living Yoga in Neutral Bay.

Some sessions go further. Yin & Pins at Sarana Bondi brings acupuncture into a longer 90-minute practice, and Flow & Restore at Humming Puppy in Redfern blends vinyasa flow with a restorative practice.

Where to practice, studio by studio

Humming Puppy Yoga Sydney in Redfern runs the most classes in this collection, and its range runs from the gentler Mellow Hum, a slower practice of low impact stretches and meditation, to Dynamic Hum, which moves at an active pace with a heat-building sequence. Foundation Hum suits anyone who wants to learn the basics first.

Alma Yoga in Mosman offers Yin & Sound, a restful yin practice finished with crystal or Tibetan bowls. Sarana Bondi in Bondi Beach and Power Living in Neutral Bay each lean toward the yin-and-sound pairing, so the choice often comes down to the neighborhood and the feel of the room.

Sunday sound: questions and answers

When do most sound baths take place?

Most of these sessions run on Sunday, and most of the week's sound baths are on weekends. The starts cluster in the evening, with the busiest times around 5:15pm to 6pm, and a smaller group runs at 2pm. Earlier starts are rare, with the first sessions beginning at 8am.

Are these classes suitable for beginners?

Yes, a good share of these classes are built for beginners. Humming Puppy Yoga Sydney in Redfern runs a Foundation Hum that is taught as a fundamentals class in a supportive setting, and about a fifth of the classes are open to people taking their first class ever. Yin-based sessions are also gentle, with poses held for longer periods.

What kinds of classes are on offer?

Most of the sessions are yoga or sound bath, and many combine both. The sound comes from gong and bowls in about half of the classes, and a smaller number feature live music. Yin is the most common style, while yoga nidra, breathwork and meditation appear in smaller numbers.

Which studios run sound baths in Sydney?

Sarana Bondi - Yoga & Pilates in Bondi Beach offers Yin & Sacred Rest and Yin & Pins, the latter a 90-minute session that brings together acupuncture and yoga. Power Living Yoga Neutral Bay Studio in Neutral Bay offers Yin + Live Sound. Alma Yoga in Mosman runs Yin & Sound with crystal or Tibetan bowls. Humming Puppy Yoga Sydney in Redfern has the widest range, from the gentler Mellow Hum to the more active Dynamic Hum.
