What the classes are
The center of the timetable is ZhemFit, a full body workout created by Alexander Zhembrovskyy from his years as a professional ballet dancer. It comes in three levels: the regular class, ZhemFit Light for a lower intensity, and ZhemFit+ for those who want more repetitions and sharper exercise. Alongside it, Stretching blends ballet, yoga, pilates and gymnastics to work on general agility and let the muscles settle.
The studio also runs Pilates with a clear focus on core strength, a Pointe class for students already on intermediate and advanced ballet, and Sensual Heels Beginners, which invites everybody to explore feeling sexy and confident in their own skin. Facilitators Chanquito van Hoeve, Vince Koffijberg and Charmaine du Mont teach a good share of the timetable.
When and how long
Classes start as early as 8:45am and as late as 9:45pm. The most common start times are 9:30am, 5:45pm, 7pm and 7:30pm, which means the evening is the busiest stretch of the day. Weekends carry about a fifth of the schedule, and Monday, Wednesday and Saturday are the days when the timetable is fullest.
Most sessions last 60 minutes. The two hour Deconstructing Balanchine workshop with Nicholas Rose is the longer exception, combining ballet class, discussion and practical exploration of the Balanchine aesthetic.
Zhembrovskyy West: questions and answers
How long are the classes?
Yes. Most classes here are 60 minutes, and a few are shorter, like a 30 minute pointe class for students already on the intermediate and advanced ballet lessons. The longest on the page is a two hour workshop, Deconstructing Balanchine, taught by Nicholas Rose.
When do most people practice here?
The classes run from 8:45am to 9:45pm. Most fall in the evening, about half of them, and about a third are in the morning. Midday is quieter, with only about one in ten. The busiest days are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
Is it good for beginners?
Some are. Stretching and the Light version of ZhemFit are gentle and suit people who want to move without much strain. ZhemFit+ asks for more repetitions and intensity, and it helps to have some coordination already. Sensual Heels Beginners is open to every body, whether or not you have worn heels before.
What kinds of classes are offered?
Mostly the classes are ballet-based, with ZhemFit as the signature: a full body workout built on ballet fundamentals and created by Alexander Zhembrovskyy. Stretching blends ballet, yoga, pilates and gymnastics. Pilates focuses on core strength, and there is a pointe class for ballet students who want an extra challenge.
Who leads the classes?
Zhembrovskyy West is in Helmersbuurt, on Eerste Helmersstraat, and it is one of two places under the same organization, the other being in De Pijp. The classes here are shared among about ten facilitators, with Chanquito van Hoeve, Vince Koffijberg and Charmaine du Mont among those teaching the most.
