Desk body in Asheville
Asheville has a clear collection of yoga for the body a desk job tends to shape: hips, the neck and shoulders, and the lower back. Most of these classes move slowly and deliberately, with a steady share of vinyasa and flow. They gather in West Asheville and Downtown Asheville, and they are easy to fit around a working day.
Where to start: Purna Yoga 828 in West Asheville, West Asheville Yoga in West Asheville or Ember Hot Yoga
It suits you if
- you spend most of the day sitting
- you want slow work for the hips and shoulders
- a midday break helps you reset

What these classes work on
The desk body collection is mostly yoga, with hips the focus of most classes and neck and shoulders the focus of about a third. Many classes pair mobility and stretch with a steady flow, so the body moves through open, lengthening shapes rather than holding one pose. Yin and restorative classes add longer holds for those who want something quieter.
Vinyasa leads the styles, with hot yoga a close second. Ember Hot Yoga offers hip-opening vinyasa in a heated room, and the warmth lets the tissues soften for deeper work. Strength and flow classes appear as well, for those who want some effort alongside the stretch.
Where and when to practice
Morning classes are the largest group, and many start between 8:15am and 10:30am. Midday classes, including the Noon Reset at Purna Yoga 828, make a break in the workday. The evening run starts as late as 5:30pm, and the busiest start times cluster around 10am, noon and 5:30pm.
West Asheville Yoga and Purna Yoga 828 hold the most classes, and Asheville Yoga Boutique adds a regular run in Downtown Asheville. Classes typically last 75 minutes. Most of the teaching comes from about ten facilitators, including Sadie Chanlett-Avery, Letitia Walker and Whitney Shroyer.
Desk body: questions and answers
When do most people practice here?
Most of the classes that fit a desk body are yoga, and many of them start in the morning. Asheville's studios run a good share of their timetable before lunch, with a smaller evening run for people who come after work. Weekend classes are a small part of the week, so weekday mornings and evenings are where most of the choice is.
Which parts of the body do these classes work on?
Hips are the body area that comes up most often in these classes, and neck and shoulders come up in about a third. Many classes also work on flexibility, mobility and joints, which suits the way a desk job holds the body.
Are there classes for beginners?
Yes. A few classes are labeled for all levels, and some are marked great for beginners, such as the Noon Reset at Purna Yoga 828. Restorative and yin classes are slower and gentler, while the strength-focused flows at West Asheville Yoga ask for more experience.
What styles of yoga are most common?
Most of the classes here are vinyasa, a flowing style where the movement follows the breath. Hot yoga is also common, with Ember Hot Yoga offering a hip-opening vinyasa class, and yin and restorative classes give the body longer, quieter holds.
Which studios and neighborhoods have the most classes?
West Asheville Yoga and Purna Yoga 828 both sit in West Asheville and have the most classes, and Asheville Yoga Boutique is in Downtown Asheville. Ember Hot Yoga rounds out the handful of studios. Between them they cover the two neighborhoods where most of the classes gather.
