What the classes are

The classes in this collection are mostly strength and Pilates, with a few practices that focus on mobility and flexibility. The sculpt and strength classes use controlled sequences and resistance, while the yoga and mobility classes use the body, props and breath to work joints and build range of motion.

Most of the sessions are early risers' classes, and they are concentrated in the morning, with nearly every class starting before 9am. The busiest days are Monday and Thursday.

Where and with whom to practice

Downtown Asheville and Black Mountain hold most of these classes. South Slope Pilates, Cherry Street Movement Studio and Asheville Yoga Boutique are the studios with the most sessions, and the same few facilitators, including Katrina, Megan, Rosie Mulford and Juliette Wall, return across them.

The classes are led in a small number of studios, so the pace and feel of each one will be fairly consistent from class to class.

Strong start: questions and answers

When do strong classes in Asheville start?

Most of these classes start before 9am, with the earliest at 6am and the latest at 7am. They are a way to begin the day with strength and movement rather than a separate session later on.

Are there strong classes for different kinds of practice?

Yes. The strong start collection includes Pilates-based work, strength classes, and a few yoga classes, so the practice you choose depends on whether you want sculpting, mobility or flow.

Which classes are a good first choice?

Strong Flow & Mobility at Asheville Yoga Boutique combines traditional asana with specific mobility moves, using the body, props and breath. SSP Sculpt at South Slope Pilates is a 50-minute class, and Warm Sculpt at Cherry Street Movement Studio is a 50-minute, Pilates-inspired strength class with controlled sequences.

Where do most of these classes take place?

Yes. The classes are concentrated in Downtown Asheville and Black Mountain, and South Slope Pilates, Cherry Street Movement Studio and Asheville Yoga Boutique have the most of them. Facilitators Katrina, Megan, Rosie Mulford and Juliette Wall lead many of the sessions.

How long are the classes?

Most classes run about 50 minutes, with a few longer sessions around an hour. The shorter length makes it easier to fit a strong practice in before work.
