Calm after work in Asheville

Asheville has a steady set of evening classes built for the end of the working day. Most of them are slow: restorative yoga, yin, gentle flow, and sound baths with gong and singing bowls. They are held mostly in the evening at West Asheville Yoga, Asheville Yoga Boutique and Good Mood, and they are designed for coming down from the day rather than adding to it.

Where to start: West Asheville Yoga in West Asheville, Bodies In Motion or Asheville Yoga Boutique in Downtown Asheville

It suits you if

  • you want slow evening practice after work
  • you like sound baths and singing bowls

When the evening classes run

The collection is shaped around the evening. Most classes begin between 5:30pm and 7:30pm, and the busiest starts cluster around 5:30pm, 6pm, 7pm and 7:30pm. Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays carry the most sessions, and a fifth of the classes fall on weekends.

Most classes run about 75 minutes. A few longer ones, including a 90-minute restorative session with hot stones and a 120-minute candlelight evening of restorative yoga and sound healing, give more time to settle.

What the classes feel like

Restorative postures, yin and gentle flow make up much of the collection. Several classes pair soft movement with breathwork, guided meditation or a sound bath. A monthly evening explores nada yoga, the yoga of sound, and a few sessions add chanting or live music.

A Monday candlelight slow flow at West Asheville Yoga uses a yin-inspired sequence to ease the body into rest, while Asheville Yoga Boutique offers gentle alignment and a Friday evening practice for releasing the week.

Calm after work: questions and answers

When do most people practice calm after work in Asheville?

Most of the evening classes in this collection run from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, with the busiest starts at 5:30pm, 6pm, 7pm and 7:30pm. Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays see the most of them. Nearly all of the classes fall in the evening, and about a fifth fall on a weekend.

What kinds of classes are in this collection?

Calm after work is mostly yoga, with restorative, yin and gentle flow the most common styles. Sound baths with gong and singing bowls, breathwork and guided meditation also appear often, and a few classes add chanting or live music. Hot stones are part of one restorative class at West Asheville Yoga.

Where should someone new to calm evening classes start?

Restorative classes and gentle flows are a good place to begin, since they are built around slow movement and long rest. Most classes run about 75 minutes, and a few stretch to 90 or 120. West Asheville Yoga and Asheville Yoga Boutique both offer several evening classes of this kind, and a few are marked as suited to first-time students.

Which studios and neighborhoods are these classes in?

Most of the classes are held at West Asheville Yoga in West Asheville, with Asheville Yoga Boutique downtown and Good Mood in the River Arts District also offering several. Taken together, the evening sessions give a way to settle into the week after the working day ends.

Who leads the classes?

Many classes here are taught by a small group of facilitators, including Crista Rose, Dana S, Gota Cebrero, Sierra Hollister and Hannah Patterson. Crista Rose also leads a candlelight restorative session with sound healing, and Irena Sterna leads a monthly sound healing evening.

Can I get to a class straight after work?

Nearly all of these classes are held in the evening, so a short commute home from work usually leaves time to get to a class. Restorative and yin sessions are built to be unhurried, and many run 75 minutes, which leaves room to arrive and settle before the start.
