New parents in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's classes for new parents mostly run in the morning and on weekends, so they fit around a baby's routine. Pilates and yoga lead the collection, with many sessions built around balance and the core and pelvic floor. Parent-and-child classes make up most of the offer, and most sessions are open to all levels.

What the classes cover

Most of the classes here are Pilates or yoga, and the two are often combined. A good share focus on balance and the core and pelvic floor, which makes them a fit for the period after birth. Many sessions are open to all levels, and more than half are marked as a first class ever, so you can start without prior experience.

The format is built around parents and children. Parent-and-child sessions make up most of the collection, and postnatal classes add a second strand for those in the weeks and months after birth. Class lengths are typically about 50 minutes.

Where and when the classes happen

Classes run mostly in the morning, with most of them taking place on weekends. Saturday, Tuesday and Friday have the most sessions, and the most popular start times are 11am, 9am and 3pm. Earliest starts are at 9am, and the latest is 3pm.

GM pilateshape in Central and WeMove Kidult Yoga in Quarry Bay host the most classes, and both neighborhoods are where most of the practice gathers. GM pilateshape offers Family Fit & Fun Pilates, a session for families that combines Pilates, Reformer and EMS technology. WeMove Kidult Yoga offers postnatal yoga, with its classes running at 60 minutes.

New parents: questions and answers

Are these classes suitable for first-time practitioners?

Yes. Most of the classes here are for all levels, and a good share are marked as a first class ever. A new parent who has not practiced before will find sessions that start gently. Specific class descriptions and levels are on each class page.

When do most of these classes take place?

Most of the classes run in the morning, and more than half fall on weekends. Saturday, Tuesday and Friday are the busiest days, with the most sessions starting at 11am, 9am and 3pm. The earliest start is 9am and the latest is 3pm, so no class begins before the morning or after the afternoon.

How long are the classes and what do they focus on?

Expect sessions of about 50 minutes, which suits a schedule built around a baby's routine. Classes here mix Pilates and yoga, and many focus on balance and the core and pelvic floor. Parent-and-child sessions are the most common life-stage in this collection.

Which studios and neighborhoods are most central to this collection?

GM pilateshape in Central and WeMove Kidult Yoga in Quarry Bay have the most classes in this collection. GM pilateshape offers Pilates and a family session that combines Pilates, Reformer and EMS technology. WeMove Kidult Yoga offers postnatal yoga and parent-and-child sessions. Phoebiya Cheng and Samantha lead the most classes among the facilitators.

Can I bring my baby to these classes?

Yes, the classes are designed for parents to practice together with their children. Family sessions such as Family Fit & Fun Pilates are built for families to bond and move together. Parent-and-child classes make up most of the collection, so many sessions are shaped around having a little one in the room.

What is the difference between postnatal and parent-and-child classes?

Postnatal and parent-and-child classes are the two life-stages this collection draws on. Postnatal sessions focus on rebuilding strength gently after birth, with an emphasis on core and pelvic floor work. Parent-and-child sessions are shaped for parents who want to move alongside their children in a relaxed setting.
