Deep rest in Kauai
Deep rest on Kauai is a small collection of restorative yoga and yoga nidra, most of it taught in the evening. The classes move slowly, use props and long holds, and often pair the poses with sound. It is a set of sessions for the end of the day, when the body needs to be supported and the mind can finally let go.
Where to start: La Vida Fitness & Wellness in Koloa or Kauai Hot Yoga in Lihue

When and where the classes run
The classes in this collection cluster in the early evening, with most starting between 5:45pm and 6pm. They are typically about an hour long. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday carry the most sessions, so the week tends to build toward the middle.
Most of the classes are held at La Vida Fitness & Wellness in Koloa and Kauai Hot Yoga in Lihue, which together account for the bulk of the listings. The studios are a short drive apart, so it is easy to compare how each one sets up its rest.
What the classes are like
Nearly every class here is restorative, and yin is present in about half. Over half include sound bath or calm as part of the practice, and many use gong and bowls to carry the stillness. Meditation and breathwork appear in only a small share, and a few classes are open to all levels.
Yin Restore + Sound at La Vida Fitness & Wellness blends yin and restorative postures with therapeutic sound, while Restorative Sacred Touch at Kauai Hot Yoga adds a touch-based element to a longer session. Slow Flow Yoga + Sound Healing at La Vida Fitness & Wellness keeps some gentle movement before settling into rest.
Deep rest: questions and answers
When do most people practice deep rest on Kauai?
Most of the classes in this collection run in the evening, with starts between 5:45pm and 6pm. Most sit on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, so those are the evenings to look at first.
Are these classes gentle enough for a complete beginner?
Yes, the classes are restorative in style, built on yin, slow flow and gentle postures with support. Most are about an hour long, and several pair the poses with gong, bowls or other sound, so the sessions suit people who want to lie down, be supported and let the body settle.
Who leads the deep rest classes?
Most of the classes here are led by a few facilitators, and Appelusa McGlynn, Garland Hume and Sosa _ teach the most of them. Each brings a slightly different way of holding the room, so it can help to try more than one.
What do the classes ask of you?
Restore is the most common feeling in this collection, and nearly all the classes describe themselves that way. About half lean toward release, and more than half toward calm, so the focus is on settling down rather than working the body hard.
