What the strong and sweaty week looks like

The week is built around strength. Nearly all of the classes carry that energy, and about a third are Pilates or focus on the core and pelvic floor. Reformer classes make up about a fifth, and yoga and strength sessions sit alongside them in similar numbers.

For heat, power yoga and vinyasa are present but not the main story. Sweat-led classes appear at a few studios, including SWEAT at Oak Pilates and SWEAT at Aspire Group Training in City Beach.

Where to find these classes

Most of the classes gather in the Margaret River area, where the studios with the most classes sit. The Yoga Room and Pilates, Oak Pilates, YOGALAB, Mint WellBeing and Swell Yoga Studio are among the places people practice most. Proactive Pilates and Exercise Rehabilitation, Aspire Group Training and Horizon Yoga add to the range, with Horizon offering a Cottesloe Scout Centre power yoga class.

Across the studios, dozens of facilitators lead these classes. Names that appear often include Aleisha, Mairi, Makenzie Gillett and Alison.

Strong and sweaty: questions and answers

When do most people practice here?

Most of them run early. More than half start before 9am, and the busiest start times are 6am, 8am, 9:30am and 7:10am. Evening classes exist but are few, with about one in ten falling in the evening, and there is very little at midday.

Which studios should a newcomer look at first?

The Yoga Room and Pilates has the most classes, with reformer Pilates, reformer flow, mat Pilates and a Pilates Burn class with weights. Oak Pilates runs STRONG and SWEAT classes, and YOGALAB offers power vinyasa for those who want more heat.

Are there classes for beginners?

Yes, some are. Swell Yoga Studio describes its mat Pilates class as suitable for all levels, built on controlled body weight exercises for strength, coordination and balance. Mat Pilates at The Yoga Room and Pilates is listed as open level too, and the reformer and Pilates Burn classes there also run at open level.

How long are the classes?

The classes are typically 50 minutes long, though some run 30 or 45 minutes and the power yoga class at Horizon Yoga runs 60. Most of the week's practice is short and focused, which suits a lunch-free day or an early start.

What kinds of classes are on offer?

Most classes sit under the strong heading, with Pilates, core and pelvic floor work, and reformer work close behind. Yoga, strength and power or vinyasa classes make up a good share as well. Sweat-led classes appear too, including SWEAT at Oak Pilates and SWEAT at Aspire Group Training in City Beach.
