About Pilates Akademie

Pilates Akademie has been on Naglergasse in Vienna's first district since 1998. Its work centers on Pilates on the studio's reformer and other equipment, with yoga and fascia work alongside it. Barbara Mayr's studio offers both private training and small group classes, and the classes are built around posture, core stability and movement that suits the body at different ages and stages.

It suits you if

  • you want equipment-based Pilates in a small group
  • you prefer early morning or evening classes on weekdays
  • you are recovering from injury or building core strength

What the studio practices

The core of the studio is Pilates on the reformer, with Cadillac, chair, barrel and spine corrector also in use, alongside the spine fitter and magic circle. Core and pelvic floor work runs through most classes, and a number of sessions use the mat in small groups. Yoga and fascia work sit alongside Pilates for those who want a wider range of movement.

Who it suits

The studio says its methods can help with back, neck and shoulder problems, support recovery after injury and surgery, and build stability for everyday life. It also works with moderators, actors, singers, musicians, older people and those before, during and after pregnancy. Classes range from gentle sessions to strong, challenging ones, so each class is chosen to match the level and goal of the person practicing.

Pilates Akademie: questions and answers

Where is Pilates Akademie?

Pilates Akademie is in the Innere Stadt, at Naglergasse 7, in the first district. Classes are held in the studio at that address.

What kind of classes does Pilates Akademie teach?

Most classes are Pilates on the studio's reformer and other equipment, with core and pelvic floor work making up more than half. Some classes are Pilates and movement on the mat in small groups, and the studio also works with yoga and fascia work.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Classes are a mix of first-timers, all levels and experienced groups. Many are marked for beginners and returners, and a Pilates course for beginners runs over four weeks to learn the basic repertoire on the equipment.

Who leads the classes?

Barbara Mayr leads most of the classes, with Nuray also teaching regularly. Barbara has been teaching for more than 28 years and brings varied sequences that are both challenging and relaxing.

When do most people practice here?

Mornings are the most common, with about half of the classes starting before noon, including some as early as 7:45am. Evenings make up about a third, with the latest starts around 6:15pm. The busiest start times are 8am, 10:15am, 5:15pm and 6:15pm, and the studio does not run classes at weekends.
