Late night stillness in Austin
After eight in the evening, Austin's practice slows down. Most of these classes are yin and restore, with long holds, low light and a quiet room. Several studios in the city offer candlelight versions, and a few add a sound bath. The evening classes give a place to wind down at the end of the day.
Where to start: Black Swan Yoga - Anderson in Crestview, Body Pilates or 11:11 Pilates and Barre (Irving)
It suits you if
- you finish work late and want to slow down

What the late classes are
The late classes in Austin are mostly restore and yin, with a few reformer and sound bath sessions. Nearly every evening class is restorative, and yin is the style most often taught. Most classes run about an hour, with the candlelight reformer sessions a little shorter.
The classes are spread across a few neighborhoods. Crestview, East Cesar Chavez and Old West Austin each have Black Swan Yoga studios with evening yin, so a person can practice close to home. Body Pilates and Obsidian Flow add their own evening options.
When and who
Classes start between 8pm and 9pm, and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are the days with the most sessions. Weekend late classes are rare, with about one in ten on a Saturday or Sunday. There are no classes in the morning or at midday, so the late schedule is only for the evening.
Facilitators such as Ajah, Melissa, Maddie, Sam, Anna K, Jocelyn, Aryhadna and Nia lead most of the sessions. Several names appear at more than one studio, so the teaching voice stays familiar from one neighborhood to the next.
Late night stillness: questions and answers
What kind of classes are there after eight in the evening?
Most of the late classes in Austin are yin, which means long, still holds on the floor, often with the lights low. Several studios also run candlelight versions, and a few sessions add a sound bath. The evening classes are mostly restore sessions, so they suit a body that has been busy all day.
When do the late classes start, and which days are busiest?
Classes in this collection start between 8pm and 9pm, and the busiest starts are 8pm, 8:30pm and 9pm. Wednesday, Monday and Tuesday have the most classes. Most run about an hour, though a few are shorter.
Which studios in Austin run late classes?
Black Swan Yoga has several studios with evening yin, including the Anderson space in Crestview, the Cesar Chavez studio in East Cesar Chavez and the Orchard studio in Old West Austin. Obsidian Flow offers a yin session, and Body Pilates has a non-heated class with a sound bath. 11:11 Pilates and Barre runs candlelight reformer classes at its Irving and Cedar Hill locations.
Are these classes good for beginners?
Yes. Yin and restore classes are slow and mostly done on the floor, so they suit a first visit. The candlelight classes are a good way to see how a late session feels, since the light is low and the pace is gentle. Ask the facilitator at the start which props to use.
What kinds of late classes are most common?
Almost all of these classes are restore sessions, and most are yoga, with yin the style most often offered. A smaller share are sound baths, reformer Pilates and core and pelvic floor work. Some are described as good for sleep, calm or flexibility.
Who leads the late classes?
Much of the evening schedule is led by a small group of facilitators, including Ajah, Melissa, Maddie, Sam, Anna K, Jocelyn, Aryhadna and Nia. The same names come up across several studios, so the teaching style stays steady from one class to the next.
