Strong and sweaty in Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe's strong and sweaty classes lean toward strength work, much of it on the reformer, with a steady current of heat and power. Most of the week's options sit in the morning, and the classes are built to push. The practice is spread across a couple of dozen studios and well over a hundred facilitators, so there is a good deal to choose from.

Strength on the reformer and beyond

Strength is the thread that runs through most of this collection. Reformer Pilates is the most common form, with sessions at selfish pilates in Carmichael, Studio Form, Liv Studio, Perfect Balance Pilates in Carson City and Montreux Golf and Country Club. Tahoe Mountain Fitness offers strength development training and a 1.5 level reformer class, and Sierra Symmetry runs athletic reformer sessions.

Alongside the reformer, you will find power vinyasa at Radiant Yoga, and jump and sculpt classes at El Dorado Hills that bring in more cardio.

When the sessions run

Mornings carry most of the week. More than half of the classes are in the morning, and about a third begin before 9am. The busiest start times are 8am, 9am and 9:30am, with a smaller cluster at 4:30pm for those who train later in the day. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday are the busiest days.

Many classes run about an hour, with some shorter sculpt and reformer sessions at 45 to 50 minutes, so an early session can fit before work.

Strong and sweaty: questions and answers

When do most strong and sweaty classes start?

Most of the strong and sweaty classes in Lake Tahoe are in the morning, and more than half of them start before 9am. The busiest start times are 8am, 9am, 9:30am and 4:30pm, so mornings are where most of the week's strength work happens. Evening options exist but are fewer.

Where can I find reformer Pilates?

Pilates is the most common thread here, with reformer classes appearing often across the city. You will find reformer Pilates at selfish pilates in Carmichael, Studio Form, Liv Studio, Perfect Balance Pilates in Carson City and Montreux Golf and Country Club. Athletic reformer and multi-level reformer classes are also on offer.

Are there classes for beginners?

Yes. Many of these classes are labeled for all levels, and the reformer and Pilates classes in particular are offered across several studios with different class names. Check the class description for the level it lists, and look for sessions described as multi-level if you are newer to strength training.

How long are the classes?

Most classes run about an hour, and the typical length is 60 minutes. Some reformer and sculpt sessions are shorter, at 45 to 50 minutes, so a short session can fit a busy morning.

Where does the sweat come from?

Heat-based classes are part of the mix, including hot yoga, infrared and some Bikram, though these are a smaller share than strength and Pilates. Power yoga and vinyasa flow are also present. Studios such as Body Heat, Hot Pilates and Yoga in Rocklin and Yoga Pod Reno are among the places to look at for heated sessions.
