Deep rest in Maui

Deep rest in Maui is a set of restorative and yoga nidra classes that lean toward the evening. Most sessions run about an hour and are built around long, supported positions, with straps and blocks helping the body settle. The collection is small and steady, with the same few studios returning to this kind of practice week after week.

Where to start: Maui Yoga and Dance Shala in Paia, Blue Mango Yoga in Haiku or Maui Powerhouse Gym in Kihei

It suits you if

  • you want to unwind after a full day
  • you are new to restorative practice
  • you prefer slow, supported positions

What the classes are

The collection is built mostly on restorative yoga, with yin classes appearing alongside it. Restorative sessions hold each posture for a long time, using props so the body can let go rather than work. Yin classes follow a similar rhythm with a slightly deeper focus on the connective tissue.

Yoga nidra appears in the collection too, as a guided practice of lying still and listening. Together these styles give the list its quiet character.

When and where to practice

Most of the sessions take place in the evening, and the most common start times fall around 6pm and 6:30pm. A smaller group of classes begins in the late morning around 10am, and there are no sessions before 9am or during the middle of the day.

Monday, Wednesday and Thursday hold the most classes. Maui Yoga and Dance Shala in Paia, Blue Mango Yoga in Haiku and Maui Powerhouse Gym in Kihei have the most sessions, and Kenna Farnworth, Gray McNeeley and Jen Lauer lead many of them.

Deep rest: questions and answers

When do most people practice deep rest in Maui?

Most of these classes take place in the evening, with a few in the morning. The busiest days are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and the most common start times are 6pm, 6:30pm and 10am. Classes usually run about an hour.

What kinds of classes make up deep rest in Maui?

Restorative yoga is the most common style here, and nearly every class is labeled that way. About half are also yin, which holds gentle positions for longer. A few classes are open to all levels, and some are offered for prenatal and postnatal practice.

Is deep rest a good place to start for beginners?

Yes. Restorative classes use straps and blocks to support the body in each position, so the pose can be held without strain. Several classes are listed as suitable for all levels, which makes them a comfortable place to begin.

Which studios are part of this collection?

Maui Yoga and Dance Shala in Paia offers yin and restorative classes. Blue Mango Yoga in Haiku offers restorative yoga, and Maui Powerhouse Gym in Kihei offers restorative sessions focused on releasing muscle tension. Together they cover the north shore, the upcountry area and the south side.

Can I use a pass for deep rest classes?

Classes in this collection do not take a pass, so each one is booked on its own. The sessions are relaxed and paced slowly, which suits a quiet evening after a full day.
