Pilates on the reformer and mat

Black Rock Pilates is built around reformer pilates, with most of its classes on the reformer and a smaller number on the mat. The reformer classes are labeled by level, from first class ever to intermediate and advanced challenge, and many ask for prior reformer experience. A mat class or a first-time reformer class is the easiest way to start.

The studio also offers strength work that combines mat pilates with equipment, and a fusion class that uses trx straps alongside the mat. Nearly all classes emphasize core and pelvic floor strength, and each is marked as strong.

When classes run

Most classes at this studio start in the morning, with the earliest at 6:15am. The popular start times are 9:30am, 10:30am, noon and 5:30pm, which fits both a short midday break and an early start before the working day. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday carry the most classes across the week.

Classes usually last 45 minutes, with some running 55 or 60 minutes. Weekend classes are a small part of the schedule, so most people plan their practice around the weekdays.

Black Rock Pilates: questions and answers

What kind of pilates is offered here?

Most classes at black rock pilates are reformer classes, and many of them ask for some reformer experience. The studio also runs mat pilates, a strength class that mixes equipment, and a trx and mat fusion class. A newcomer looking for a first class will find a few options marked for first-time practitioners, so the choice depends on how much you have practiced before.

When do most people practice at black rock pilates?

Most of the classes start in the morning. The earliest start is 6:15am, and the morning window holds more than half of the schedule. The busiest start times are 9:30am, noon, 10:30am and 5:30pm. A smaller share of classes falls at midday and in the evening, and only a handful run on weekends.

Is black rock pilates suitable for beginners?

Yes, many of the classes are labeled mixed level, which means people of different experience practice together. Several of the reformer classes ask for prior reformer experience, so a beginner should look for the classes marked as first class ever or for a mat class. Most of the classes run about 45 minutes, with some reaching 55 or 60 minutes.

Who leads the classes at black rock pilates?

Black Rock Pilates is in Bridgeport, on the second floor of a building on Fairfield Avenue. Most of the classes are taught by a team of about ten facilitators, and a few of them lead a large share of the schedule, including Alexa Capuano, Jayne Gerwien and Casey Sylvestro. Each facilitator brings their own way of teaching, so it can help to try a few before settling on one.

Is there a pass or membership for the classes?

Black Rock Pilates has a handful of studio locations across the city, and the schedule is built around its reformer work. None of the classes are sold as a pass, so each class is booked on its own. Most of the classes focus on core strength and pelvic floor work, and nearly all of them carry a strong energy.
