What the heat classes are

Nearly every class in this collection is hot yoga, and nearly all are built to make you sweat. Within that, you will find vinyasa, power yoga and strength-based sessions that combine yoga with pilates and barre movements. A handful lean toward calm, with yin, restorative and restore-focused classes.

Most classes run about an hour, and a few are shorter at 45 minutes. Anahata Levitate and the longer sessions reach 75 minutes for those who want more time in the heat.

When the heat runs

More than half of the classes take place in the morning, and about half start before 9am. Early practice is the rhythm of this collection, with the first classes beginning at 5:05am. Evenings and weekends carry a smaller share, and classes at midday are less common.

Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday are the busiest days. If you want to plan around the week, the 6am and 8:30am starts are among the most frequent.

Heat: questions and answers

What kind of heat classes can I find in Santa Cruz?

Most of the heat classes here are hot yoga, and nearly all of them are built to make you sweat. Hot Elevation Studios in Capitola, Anahata Hot Yoga and Wellness Center in Felton, and Sol Hot Yoga in Scotts Valley all carry a lot of them. Classes run from about 45 to 75 minutes, with 60 minutes the usual length.

When do most heat classes start?

Classes start as early as 5:05am and run as late as 7pm. Most classes are held before 9am, and the busiest start times are noon, 6am, 8:30am and 4pm. Thursday, Tuesday and Sunday are the days when the most classes run.

Are there heat classes that are gentler than the intense sessions?

Yes. Many of the classes are strength-based or pilates-inspired, such as Hot Pilates Express at Santa Cruz Athletic Club and hot pilates 45 at Hot Elevation Studios. Hot Barre Sculpt at Sol Hot Yoga blends yoga, ballet and Pilates in a low impact format, and Anahata Vinyasa Flow suits anyone who wants a steadier, flowing pace.

What styles of heat yoga are offered?

Several of the heat classes here are built around flowing vinyasa, a style that moves steadily from one pose to the next. Power yoga, yin, restorative and a few Bikram sessions also appear. Strength and core work are common too, so you can choose the kind of heat that suits your body on a given day.

Which studios have the most heat classes?

Santa Cruz has a good number of heat studios, so people who want to practice regularly can find options across the area. Hot Elevation Studios, Anahata Hot Yoga and Wellness Center, Santa Cruz Athletic Club, Sol Hot Yoga and The Club at Los Gatos are among the studios with the most classes, spread across Capitola, Felton, Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley and Rio Del Mar.
