How the week is shaped

The studio's weekly shape is built around the early hours. Classes start as early as 7am, and a large share of the week falls in the morning, with a noticeable group of sessions before 9am. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday are the busiest days, and the most common start times are 7am, 10:15am, 5pm and 7:15pm.

The practice is mostly yoga in the ashtanga tradition. Guided classes take you through the primary series with spoken and demonstrated instruction, while mysore sessions let you move at your own pace with the teacher available for individual guidance. Hatha, yin and gentle flow give a slower counterpoint.

Who leads the classes

A couple of dozen facilitators teach here, and Lisa, Mina, Michael C, Melitta and Ruth lead the most classes. Several of them guide ashtanga, while others teach prenatal yoga, yin and animal flow, so the mix of voices stays broad.

Sessions run from about 60 minutes up to two hours, with 90 minutes the usual length. The studio does not sell passes for its classes.

before sunrise: questions and answers

Are the classes in English?

Yes. Nearly all of the classes at before sunrise are offered in both German and English, so you can follow a guided practice in whichever language you prefer.

What kinds of yoga are taught at before sunrise?

Ashtanga is the style that leads here, with more than half of the classes, and mysore, the self-paced form of ashtanga, makes up about a third. Yin, hatha, gentle flow and animal flow appear too, along with prenatal yoga and breathwork.

Is it a good place for beginners?

Yes. More than half of the classes are labeled all levels, and there are a few classes for first-time practitioners. Gently guided yoga is a slower, adapted take on ashtanga for anyone who wants that pace.

When do most people practice at before sunrise?

Mornings are the heart of the schedule. About half of the classes fall in the morning, with the earliest starts at 7am, and a little over a third begin before 9am. Evening classes are also common, with the latest start at 7:45pm.

How long are the classes?

Most classes run about 90 minutes. Longer sessions of around two hours, such as the hatha yoga class, are also on the timetable, as are shorter 60-minute classes like yoga for pregnant women and animal flow.
