What the studio offers

The studio's timetable is built around movement with music. Dance fitness, Zumba and beats-style classes sit at the center of the week, alongside fitness classes that run under the SPIRIT name. Yoga is listed too, though it makes up only about one in ten classes, so it is a smaller part of what is on offer.

Most classes last an hour. The youth and teens fitness session is shorter, at 45 minutes, which gives younger people a session sized for their pace.

How the week runs

Classes gather in the evening, with about a third of them falling between 5pm and 6:30pm. The busiest start times are 5pm, 4pm, 10:30am and 2pm, so there are options through the afternoon as well. Thursday, Monday and Wednesday carry the most classes across the week.

Weekend classes make up about a fifth of the schedule, and midday sessions are a similar share. Nothing begins before 9am, so the studio is not a choice for early mornings.

Facilitators and locations

Classes are taught by a couple of dozen facilitators. Francis Bella, Sam Allen, Prince Lapnet, Lizzie Pickett, Christopher McCrae, Ventatia Zeelie, Renee Sloan, Binyam Tadesse, Tricia Han and Anna Alderete lead the largest number of sessions.

The studio's Kensington space is at 10417 Metropolitan Avenue in Kensington, MD, and the SPIRIT name also covers locations in Gaithersburg, Largo, Upper Marlboro and Silver Spring.

SPIRIT Club - MoCo/DC: questions and answers

How much of the schedule is yoga?

Yoga is one of the smaller parts of the timetable here, about one in ten classes. Most of the week is taken up by fitness, dance and beats-style classes, so a visitor looking for a yoga-only practice will find fewer options than elsewhere in the schedule.

When do most people practice here?

Classes are mostly in the evening, with about a third falling between 5pm and 6:30pm, the latest start in the timetable. Busy starts cluster at 4pm, 5pm and 2pm, and a smaller set begins as early as 10:30am. Nothing starts before 9am.

What kinds of classes does the studio offer?

Dance fitness, Zumba, beats-style sessions and fitness classes make up most of what is offered. The studio also runs SPIRIT Yoga and a youth and teens fitness class of 45 minutes, so there is some variety in length and audience.

How long are the classes, and which days are busiest?

Most classes run for an hour, and youth and teens fitness is a shorter 45-minute session. Thursday, Monday and Wednesday are the busiest days, so those are the days with the most choice.

Where are the classes held?

Classes are spread across the Kensington location and several other places listed under the SPIRIT name, including sites in Gaithersburg, Largo, Upper Marlboro and Silver Spring. Kensington is where the yoga, Zumba and beats-style classes are listed.
