A wide range of styles
The studio describes itself as teaching many styles, including iyengar, yin, yang, vinyasa and anusara, complemented by pranayama, meditation, dance and body balancing. In the timetable, yoga as a general practice makes up about half of the classes, with hatha, strength and mobility and stretch each appearing across a fifth of the offerings.
Slower forms show up alongside them: restorative, yin and calm classes, plus pilates, yogalates and breathwork for people who want a different kind of work on the body.
How the week is shaped
Classes run across the day, with about a third in the morning, a third in the evening and a third at weekends. Monday, Sunday and Tuesday are the busiest days, and the earliest class starts at 8:45am while the latest starts at 8:15pm.
The classes are led by a couple of dozen facilitators, with Jelena, Sheetal, Christelle, Fora, Sanja, Margarita, Silvia and Emma among those teaching most often. Most classes are taught in Dutch, and the studio is in Amstelveen at Lindenlaan 75.
Shiva Yoga Center: questions and answers
Are there classes in English?
Most classes are taught in Dutch. Some are offered in English, for example the vinyasa and yogalates fusion classes, and a traditional hatha class led by Pushpa, so a newcomer who prefers English can look for those.
When do most classes start?
Classes start from about 8:45am and run as late as 8:15pm. Busiest starts tend to fall around 10am, 6:30pm and 9am, and the evening and morning slots each account for about a third of the timetable.
Is there something for beginners or older practitioners?
Yes. The studio includes a special hatha class for an older group in a cozy, familiar setting, and a restorative class led by Fora that is taught in Dutch, with a slow, passive style that suits a gentle start.
How long are the classes?
Most classes run 60 or 75 minutes. Yin, hatha and restorative classes tend to be the longer ones, while the vinyasa and pilates classes are shorter.
