Styles and how classes feel

The studio draws on several traditions, from iyengar and vinyasa to yin, restorative and qigong. Iyengar classes give close attention to alignment and props, and most sessions last around 75 minutes. Gentle and slow flow classes suit people who want to move without a fast pace.

Restorative and yin sessions are slower still, built around long holds and rest. Qigong is offered in shorter sessions, and there is a chair yoga class for older students.

Teachers and the weekly rhythm

Morning classes make up about half the timetable, with the earliest starts at 7:30am. Evenings bring a steady number of sessions, and the busiest start times are 6pm and 10:30am. Midday classes around noon fill the gaps in between.

The teachers include Sonya, who has advanced anatomy training, and Dewey, who works with iyengar for recovery and emotional wellbeing. Francine brings an energy-focused approach to her classes. The studio says its teachers create a space for healing and self-discovery, and a first visit is a simple way to see how that feels.

Sage Yoga Shala: questions and answers

Is Sage Yoga Shala good for beginners?

Yes. Iyengar, vinyasa, yin, restorative and qigong all have a place in the timetable, so a first visit can start from whatever suits your body that day. Gentle classes and beginner yoga are among the regular offerings.

How long are the classes?

Most classes run around 75 minutes. Iyengar sessions are usually longer, and qigong and the senior chair yoga class are shorter, so the length depends on the style you choose.

What kinds of classes are there?

Yoga makes up more than half of what is offered, and gentle classes come next. Iyengar, flow, vinyasa and restorative sessions fill most of the rest, with a few qigong and senior-focused classes.

When do most people practice here?

Most practice happens in the morning, and about a third of classes fall in the evening. Weekend classes make up about a third of the schedule, and Tuesday, Sunday and Thursday are the busiest days.

Who leads the classes?

Sonya, Dewey, Francine, LaRee, Greg and Zilia teach the most classes. The studio has about ten facilitators in total, and Francine's classes lean toward yin and restorative work.
