What the mornings hold

The collection is built around strength. Strength classes make up about half of the listings, and Pilates and core and pelvic floor work together account for about a third. Reformer appears in about a fifth of the classes, so the bed-style equipment is a steady presence across the studios.

Alongside that, a handful of yoga classes appear, including power yoga at Santa Cruz Athletic Club and hot yoga flow at Sol Hot Yoga. Vinyasa, barre and classes focused on sweat are present but rare.

Where and with whom

Santa Cruz Athletic Club, Miel Pilates, RockSalt Santa Cruz, The Club at Los Gatos and Pilates by Natalia run the most of these classes. Most of the studios sit in Santa Cruz and Capitola, with others in Twin Lakes, Rio Del Mar and Scotts Valley. Taylor Keenan, Emi Reese, Christy Cabezut and Skye Folsom are among the facilitators who lead the most classes, and a couple of dozen facilitators teach across the collection.

Classes usually run about 50 minutes, with some stretching to an hour and a few shorter sessions of 45 minutes.

Strong start: questions and answers

When do most people practice this strong start?

Most of the strong classes start before 9am, with the earliest at 5am and the latest at 7:30am. Starts cluster around 6am, 6:30am and 7:30am, and the busiest days are Monday, Thursday and Friday.

What kinds of classes are in this collection?

The collection leans toward strength and Pilates, with about half the classes focused on strength and about a third on Pilates or core and pelvic floor work. Reformer classes appear in about a fifth of the listings, and a handful of yoga classes, including power yoga and hot yoga, sit alongside them.

Which studios and neighborhoods run the most of these classes?

Santa Cruz Athletic Club, Miel Pilates, RockSalt Santa Cruz, The Club at Los Gatos and Pilates by Natalia all have a large share of the morning classes. Most of the classes are in Santa Cruz itself and in Capitola, with others in Twin Lakes, Rio Del Mar and Scotts Valley.

How long are the classes?

Most classes run around 50 to 60 minutes, and a few, like RedRoom Hyb-RED HIIT at Santa Cruz Athletic Club, run about an hour. Build x Burn at the same club and Reformer Pilates at Miel Pilates are shorter, at 45 minutes.

Is this collection suitable for beginners?

Several classes are marked for experienced practitioners, and about one in ten is pitched that way. Classical Reformer at Pilates by Natalia, which runs at levels two and three, is one example. Newcomers can look for classes marked as mat Pilates or general Pilates, like Mat Pilates at Pacific Edge Climbing Gym.

How do the yoga classes fit into the strong start?

Some of the classes are in the strength and Pilates family, and a few are hot or power yoga, such as Hot Yoga Flow at Sol Hot Yoga, which is described as a dynamic vinyasa flow that builds strength and focus. The mix lets a morning practice lean toward strength, reformer or yoga depending on what the day needs.

Are there classes later in the day or on weekends?

None of the classes are offered at midday or in the evening, and only a very small number fall on weekends, so this collection is mostly a weekday morning practice.
